InVault use case
Returnable container tracking for pallets, totes and racks
InVault brings returnable container tracking to pallets, totes, racks, IBCs, dunnage and rental equipment, the capital that leaves your dock every day. It audits what goes out, shows who holds each item and for how long, and flags what hasn’t come back.

The problem
Returnables leave full and come back late, or not at all.
Once containers, racks or rental items leave the dock, most operations lose sight of them. Which customer has them? How long have they been there? Will they come back?
The bill shows up as replacement purchases, extra truck runs to collect missing items, and incomplete kits shipped because nobody could check what was in the box without opening it.
- Returnable transport items
- Pallets, totes, racks, IBCs, dunnage and RTI containers
- Rental & event equipment
- Furniture and equipment for sports, music, trade shows and conferences
- Kits & containers
- Boxes and cases audited as a single kit
What changes
What returnable container tracking gives you
- Every outbound load audited against its work order, at the dock door or with a handheld, before the truck leaves
- Kits assembled without errors, shortages caught before shipping, and every item confirmed back on return
- For each item: which customer or site holds it, how long it has been there and whether it is overdue
- A usage history per item, showing what breaks and what lasts, so you can plan purchases and rotation
How it works
Capture, understand, act.
- CaptureRFID tags on items and containers, RFID location markers in the building, fixed readers at dock doors, handhelds for periodic inventory, and GPS tags on items that travel.
- UnderstandTrapeze links each read to a work order, customer, container and location, and flags shortages, wrong items and leave-behinds.
- ActA display at the dock shows loading progress in real time so operators fix exceptions on the spot. Visium reports custody, dwell, availability and missing items.
Returnable asset tracking
Three loops we see most often.
Pallet and tote tracking in supplier loops
Totes, pallets, racks and dunnage shuttle between your plant and your suppliers or customers. Dock-door reads in both directions show who has how many, and dwell-time alerts tell you when a partner is sitting on your containers.
Rental and event equipment
Furniture and equipment rented for events or projects is reserved on an availability calendar, audited as it is loaded and checked in when it returns, so a missing chair is noticed at the dock, not at the next booking.
Kits and cases
Boxes and cases that must ship complete are audited as one kit without opening them. Shortages show up before the truck leaves, and the same check runs again when the kit comes back.

Inhabitr
A luxury furniture rental company replaced paper inventory checks with InThing’s returnable asset tracking, Zebra handheld and fixed RFID readers, and RFID and GPS tags. Furniture is audited at the dock door, which stops wrong shipments and reruns between warehouses and customer locations.

Questions buyers ask
Returnable container tracking FAQ
Can we audit a closed box or a full load without opening it?
Usually, yes. Passive UHF RFID reads without line of sight, so a handheld or a dock-door reader can audit a container’s contents as one kit. Metal and liquids affect read performance, so we choose tags and reader setup for your items.
How do we track returnables once they leave our site?
Items that travel can carry GPS or LoRaWAN tags that report location outside your walls. For high-volume, lower-value items, RFID reads at your outbound and inbound docks show who had what, and for how long.
Will it work with our order or ERP system?
Yes. At Inhabitr, the company’s own operational system creates customers and work orders through the Visium API, and dock-door audits run against them. EAI-Bridge connects to ERP and WMS platforms such as SAP and Oracle.
