Why we built our own
Dashboards answer the questions someone thought of in advance. Operations people ask new ones every day: How many carts are in Assembly right now? When was this instrument last seen? Who is still on site in Building 2?
In early 2026 we ran a proof of concept with Microsoft in which AI wrote database queries directly. It answered simple questions well, and showed us that letting AI write raw queries makes permissions hard to guarantee. So we built our own engine on a different principle: the AI can only use the same secured APIs our applications use.
What Visium AI does
- Ask in plain language. Where things are, what moved, what is overdue, who is on site. Answers come from live data, across more than 120 read-only capabilities covering items, locations, history, people and work orders.
- Act with approval. When Visium AI suggests a change (moving an item or updating its status), it shows a preview, and nothing happens until you approve it.
- Bring your own assistant. Visium can securely share read-only data with MCP-compatible tools such as Claude or ChatGPT, when an administrator turns it on.
Secure by design
- Answers only include what the user’s role is already allowed to see; every call is checked for permissions and tenant.
- No direct database access and no AI-written SQL.
- Protection against prompt injection, plus an audit log of every question and action.
- Runs on InThing’s own Microsoft Azure AI Foundry deployment, with AI switched on per customer and usage limits set by subscription.
What’s next
Visium AI is in final internal testing ahead of release. Next, we are bringing the same engine to Visium’s new workflow and dashboard builders, so you can describe an automation or a report in plain words and get a draft to review.
